Alex Rodriguez left Joe Girardi a message today, and from the looks of it, the surgery went well.

"He left me a message," said General Joe. "He sounded good. Said: 'I'm doing well.' Good to hear from him."

As River Avenue Blues suggested yesterday, the 2009 season -- at least in terms of injuries -- is very similar to 2003, when Derek Jeter went down on Opening Day (remember Ken Huckaby?) Erick Almonte had to fill in for a month and a half, and the Yankees still managed to go 25-11. Perhaps the same will be true for the 2009 Yankees, with Cody Ransom taking the place of Erick Almonte.

Jeter Playing Against Yanks

The Yankees played team USA today and lost 6-5. But the fact that the Yanks came within one run is pretty impressive, considering these were the starting lineups:

Clearly, Team USA was favored from the get-go.

Gardner had another solid day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a stolen base. Cody Ransom and Jorge Posada also had multi-hit games. Phil Hughes started, pitching two outs into the third inning. He allowed three hits and two runs.

On the USA side, Derek Jeter went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI's. Roy Oswalt pitched into the fourth inning, with Brad Ziegler, Matt Thornton, Heath Bell, Jonathan Broxton, and Matt Lindstrom following.

While I won't be following the WBC religiously, I am hoping that the American team comes through. Ultimately, a victory in the tournament will depend on the effort of the players and the managing of Davey Johnson.

Desperate Fan

In his latest book, entitled The Yankee Years, Joe Torre rips into some of his former teammates and colleagues.

In the book, written with Tom Verducci, Torre claims that teammates referred to A-Rod as A-Fraud. He also claims that Alex was obsessed with his counterpart on the left side of the infield, Derek Jeter.

Torre also bashes Brian Cashman, saying that Cashman betrayed him by not sticking up for him in October 2007. If you remember, Torre's comments at a press conference that month stated otherwise.

Joe Torre has always been known for his calm, mature demeanor. Hopefully his remarks do not change his legacy as one of the greatest Yankee managers of all time; still, it casts a controversial light over the former manager.

MLB.com's This Year in Baseball Awards gave the "Moment of the Year" to Derek Jeter's post-game speech from September 21st, the last game at Yankee Stadium.

Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez were each named to The Sporting News American League All Star team on Friday, following a campaign in which both were selected to start in the 2008 All Star Game.

Jeter finished with a .300 average, 11 home runs, and 69 RBI's. A-Rod finished with a .302 average, 35 home runs, and 103 RBI's.

Also representing the American League were: catcher Joe Mauer, first baseman Justin Morneau, second baseman Dustin Pedroia, outfielders Carlos Quentin, Grady Sizemore, and Josh Hamilton, designated hitter Aubrey Huff, starting pitcher Cliff Lee, and reliever Francisco Rodriguez.

Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera both tied records in today's 8-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Jeter, who had three hits, tied Lou Gehrig for the most hits all-time at Yankee Stadium (1,269).

Rivera, meanwhile, tied Lee Smith for second-place on the all-time saves list (478).

Offense: After scoring just one run in the first game of today's doubleheader, the Yankees improved on their hitting and scored six runs in the nightcap. Derek Jeter, who had finished the day with six hits in the two combined games, went 3-for-3, increasing his average to .303. Robinson Cano and Cody Ransom also had multi-hit games. Wilson Betemit contributed his sixth home run of the year off Matt Garza, while Xavier Nady and Bobby Abreu each had big RBI singles in the seventh and eighth innings.

Phil Coke

Pitching: Sidney Ponson delivered a terrible start, barely lasting into the fourth inning. He gave up four runs, all of which came on a grand slam off the bat of Ben Zobrist. In relief, Phil Coke pitched 2.2 innings of flawless baseball. He has really emerged as a solid pitcher in the past few weeks, and hopefully he'll get his shot with the club next year. Meanwhile, Damaso Marte, Joba Chamberlain, and Mariano Rivera combined to shut the Rays down in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.

Sidney Ponson

Final Notes:

- Derek Jeter is now three hits away from tying Lou Gehrig for the most hits all-time at Yankee Stadium.

- Mariano Rivera now has 34 saves on the season and 477 in his career. He is one save away from tying Lee Smith for second all-time.

- In his last five starts, Sidney Ponson has allowed 25 runs, 35 hits, and 11 walks. I don't think we'll be seeing much of him down the stretch.
