Over the next few days here at The Bronx Insider, I will re-visit my top 10 favorite photos from the 2008 season.

Here is number 10:

Perfect Games
Perfect Games

This was taken in the pre-game ceremonies that took place on September 21st, the last game of Yankee Stadium. It shows all three pitchers and their respective catchers that threw and caught perfect games at the Stadium. Plus, how often do you get to see Yogi Berra and David Wells in the same picture?

Giving Thanks For Thanksgiving

  • Nov 26, 2008
  • Post a comment

In honor of Thanksgiving, here are 5 things that we, as Yankee fans, should be grateful for:

1) Mike Mussina had a great year. Imagine where the Yankees would have been if he put up the numbers he did in 2007.

2) The greatest hitter of all time, Alex Rodriguez, is on our team. He may be skipping Kabbalah school, but you can't deny that he's put up some amazing numbers.

3) Carl Pavano, the Rajah of Rehab himself, is no longer under contract.

4) Bobby Meacham is no longer the third base coach.

5) Next year, the Yankees might actually have a right fielder who can run within ten feet of the outfield wall!

We often hear on Thanksgiving that there we owe it to give thanks for our blessings because there are people out there who are less fortunate. Well, there are certainly teams out there that are less fortunate than the Yankees (try every sports franchise in the world), so take a moment and give thanks to what we, as fans, have been given.

A Letter From Bud Selig

  • Nov 24, 2008
  • Post a comment

If you recall, I sent a letter to Bud Selig last month as part of a class project.

Well, one month later, I have received a personalized letter back. How cool is that?

Here it is, verbadem:

Dear Jeffrey:

Thank you for your letter of October 29, 2008. I really appreciate your intense interest in the sport of Baseball and I thank you for your thoughtful comments relative to our drug testing program and interleague play.

I certainly can understand your critique of instant replay. You know that we have only a limited form on homerun calls and on the outfield walls, as well as, along the foul poles. The new ballparks have made it very difficult for umpires to see, and quite frankly, they even agreed with this. They had to run 200-300 feet to call a ball and in some of the parks it was impossible. That is why we went to a limited form of instant replay. There will be no further replay as long as I am Commissioner in the next 4 1/2 years.

Your Tim Kurkjian comment is absolutely accurate and I am delighted that you want to be in Baseball some day. We have great intern programs for individuals leaving college and I hope you will avail yourself of that opportunity.

It was a pleasure to hear from you and I thank you for taking the time to write to me. If there is anything further I can do to help you with your class project, please do not hesitate to contact me again.

Sincerely,

Allan H. Selig
Commissioner of Baseball

--

Bud Selig has taken his share of criticism, but the fact that he took time out to write a personalized response says a lot about him.

It's also interesting that he capitalized Baseball, eh?

Moose Calls It Quits

  • Nov 19, 2008
  • Post a comment

Foxsports.com is reporting that Mike Mussina has officially retired after a stellar 18-year career.

Mussina, who turns 40 in December, was a pitcher of "almost's" - he almost threw a perfect game, almost won a World Series, almost won a Cy Young. This year, he erased one of his "almost's" by winning 20 games. No pitcher has had such a dominating final season since Sandy Koufax in the 1960's.

Mussina finishes his career with a 270-153 record and a 3.68 ERA. Only twenty pitchers in history have finished 100 or more games over .500, and sixteen of them are in the Hall of Fame (the other four are not yet eligible).

Mussina's .638 winning percentage also ranks sixth all-time for a pitcher with that many wins (Lefty Grove, Christy Mathewson, Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, and Grover Cleveland are the only one's that have a higher percentage).

In the history of baseball, I doubt there will ever be a pitcher as saavy, knowledgable, successful, or intriguing as Mike Mussina. Here's to a good retirement.
